What the calculator does
Enter the price of the excavator, the down payment you can make, an annual rate and the number of months. The calculator returns the estimated monthly payment on a fixed-payment equipment loan and the total cost, which is every payment plus the down payment.
Costs the excavator calculator leaves out
It does not model a lease, a fair market value buyout, sales tax, delivery, insurance or any fee a partner might charge. To include those by hand: add taxes and delivery to the price if they will be financed; add any buyout amount to the total cost; and add fees listed in the offer to the total.
A worked example, by hand
A hypothetical illustration, not an offer: a used mini excavator priced at $60,000, with $12,000 down and a rate of zero over 48 months, would carry a payment of $1,000 a month and a total cost of $60,000. Any rate above zero raises both numbers; enter the rate from a real quote to see by how much.
Choosing a term for an excavator
Pick a term that ends while the machine still has years of work left in it. Ask your dealer or mechanic how many hours a machine of that age usually runs before major repairs, and estimate how many hours a year you will use it. The term should end well before that point.
Comparing two quotes with the calculator
- Run the first quote: price, down payment, rate and term from the dealer or partner.
- Write down the monthly payment and total cost.
- Run the second quote the same way.
- Add any buyout, fees or financed taxes to each total by hand.
- Compare totals first, then decide whether the lower payment is worth any extra cost.
Stretching the term trims the payment and lifts the total. The calculator makes that trade-off visible in a few seconds.
Attachments, delivery and the price you enter
Buckets, thumbs, breakers and delivery are often quoted separately. If they will be financed with the machine, add them to the price before you run the calculator. If you will pay cash for them, leave them out and remember them when you compare total costs.
Why excavators come up in Franklin County, WA
Construction had 380 employer establishments in Franklin County in 2023, more than any other sector, and two-thirds had fewer than five employees (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023). For a small crew, a compact excavator is often the first large machine.
Loans, leases and buyouts are compared on the equipment financing page; sector detail is on the contractor financing page; other tools and guides are on the resources page.
